[The haze of cigar smoke fills the air as we are in Detective Dasse’s office. The thickness rivals that of pea soup or fog on the dampest of days. As our eyes severe the clouds we note the stacks of files spread out on the desk weighed down by the paperweights of cigar cases and booze]
[The filing cabinets across from us are busting loose with the information they contain about everything from cases to coupons for porno discs. Imagine your case file, your life lying right next to an ad for Teagan’s upcoming DVD, do you feel safe?]
[The door cracks open and in walks a woman, Doctor Hordem’s sister, Lisa. Her brown hair and eyes shine radiantly even through the smoke. Her turtle neck sweater fits her form lovely as does the tight black pants she wears. She often gets told that she brings people to mind of Jennifer Aniston, in that regular person/Hollywood comparison sort of way]
[She’s at first taken back by the presence of the smoke and the stench of it. Her face cringes up as she adjusts to the crude smell of smoke, but she’ll bear it at the moment to meet with Dasse about her brother]
[We pan away from her to the chair turned backwards]
Lisa: Hello Detective.
[She says this struggling not to cough with all the smoke, the chair turns towards her. And in it sits a smiling Marcus Trapier with a cigar in hand. Panning back towards Lisa, she’s shocked, but not panicked]
Trapier: Hello, Miss Hordem.
[Confusion sets in for a moment]
Lisa: Who are you? Where is Detective Dasse?
[Marcus smiles a warm smile as he puts the cigar out in the ashtray to his right. He stands up an extends his hand to Lisa]
Trapier: I’m Marcus Trapier, I’m a friend of your brother’s. An old-time friend in fact.
[Lisa cautiously extends her hand, which Marcus leans to kiss. She’s still confused, but becomes somewhat more comfortable after this gesture]
Lisa: Pleased to meet you, but where is Detective Dasse?
[While she speaks Marcus moves to the other side of the desk, which he then leans back against]
Trapier: Detective Dasse came to me about your brother and after speaking with him, we both thought it’d be best if I spoke to you about it.
[Lisa still seems rather uncertain about all of this. Trapier motions for her to sit and after a moment she does so]
Lisa: So what do you have to tell me, Mr. Trapier?
[Marcus’ eyes gleam as he realize he’s gotten her take the bait, he moves back behind the desk]
Trapier: Well…
[Cut away]
[Fade up on the inside of a café, the tables are set and decorated with flowers and a candle in the center. The place is fairly empty, except for the murmur of two people in the corner. From this distance, we can tell that one of them is Jack. His dark hair tied back in a ponytail. He wears a grey hoodie with the Minstrel mask on it and a pair of cargo pants]
[The man sitting across from him wears a brown wide-rimmed hat with a matching brown trenchcoat. Upon further examination, we find out that this man is none other then Detective Dasse. He sips a glass of water as we manage to get audible feed]
Jack: So you have any questions?
[The detective nods his head and as he swallows]
Dasse: The girl’s not going to be harmed, is she?
[Jack reaches into his sweatshirt pocket, there is a slight look of panic from Dasse. He then relaxes as he realizes it only an envelope. Jack holds it up]
Jack: You’re getting this, what’s the difference?
Dasse: I’ll have a cleaner conscience that way.
[Jack holds out the envelope with Dasse grabs]
Jack: Oh, you’re conscience is clean right now?
[Dasse smiles as he peaks into the envelope]
Dasse: It is now.
[Dasse closes the envelope lid and puts it in his pocket]
Jack: Alright, so not a word about this again. As far as your concerned Doctor Hordem and that case never existed.
[Dasse nods, but then gives an inquisitive look]
Dasse: What’s the big deal about all this anyway? I mean the guy had a nervous breakdown, it’s not like someone is dead.
[Jack smirks]
Jack: Actually, it’s exactly like that.
[Cut away]
[Fade in on a poker table in a dark room. The table lies with a single light bulb above it, providing just enough light for the table and none for the surrounding area. The table’s felt is green, which is rather ironic given that particular color is the color of greed]
[There is a thud as something falls onto the table from a white gloved hand, we look and see the shining gold of NAPW Provincial title. The lights sways back and forth moving the shimmer on the belt back and forth]
[Into the light steps the holder of this belt, the NAPW’s most controversial star, the Minstrel. He wears an orange suit with purple shirt and tie. His face is hidden behind his mask this time. The smile of mask even further emphasized by the ref lips painted on]
Minstrel: All-in.
[He chuckles as he moves around the table so that he is no adjacent to the cameraman]
Minstrel: J.C., baby, the time has come for you. You know what’s on the line.
[Shift to a shot of the title belt]
Minstrel: Here’s your chance to complete your comeback, to step into the spotlight, to take your place among the elite names… To enter the record books as the first man to beat the odyssey known as...
Minstrel: Little old me.
[He reaches into his pocket with his left hand and pulls out a deck of playing cards]
Minstrel: You know J.C., last week you sure had some fairly rotten things to say to me. Kind of hit me right here.
[He pounds his chest with the cards then giggles]
Minstrel: You called me a cheat, a rat, a weasel… But you missed one thing my friend. You missed one phrase that sums it up more then any other.
[Close up to the mask]
Minstrel: Winner. I win, I always do.
Minstrel: You see J.C., this is the real world we live in, this is no fantasy world. Fact is, I do cheat, and I’m damned good at it… I’m so good, I haven’t been caught and that’s the game. That’s the mistake everyone makes. They look at my line of victories and they say, “Well he cheated here and won dirty here so that means he didn’t really win”.
[He shakes his head as he begins shuffling the cards]
Minstrel: A win is a win, flat out. And I feel disrespected that people look at me like all I’ve got is bag of tricks and I’m even more upset some people think that bag will run out.
[He moves back around the table to his original spot, shuffling the cards as he does so]
Minstrel: I’ve always got a plan, my friend… I’ve always got a back-up should the worst case scenario happen and that’s what you’ve got to account for when you step in the ring with me… The unexpected.
[He turns towards the camera and deals two cards over the title and two in front of him]
Minstrel: J.C., I actually have a lot of respect for you. I admire a man, who is able to come back from injury and attempt to make a name for himself. I admire a man, who is this close.
[He flips the cards opposite him over, they are a king and an ace suited diamonds]
Minstrel: You’ve got talent, no doubt. You’ve got fans, no question. But can you go head to head with the man, who is quickly becoming legend?
[He burns one card face down then flips up three others. Ace of hearts, King of hearts, Two of clubs]
Minstrel: Can you walk into that ring and walk out a champion?
[He burns another card and flips another one over an Ace of diamonds. Full house]
Minstrel: On another night, versus another man, I would put a lot of money on you, J.C…
[Final burn card and the river is a Two of hearts]
Minstrel: Because I know you’re going to bring the house… You’re going to put everything you have on the line.
[He picks up the cards in front of him and looks, then flips down a Two of spades and Two of diamonds. Giving him four of a kind one of only two hands that could have beaten the full house]
Minstrel: And I’m going to take it.
[Cut away]
