STATIC: A MOMENT OF CLARITY
by Megan Adams, staff writer
Edmonton-based New Alberta Pro Wrestling star Static has undergone a metamorphosis unlike any other since the promotion opened up on Halloween '05. He already has an impressive resume, being the only one in NAPW to hold two different championships, the Provincial and Tag Team. But what comes next is most important to him. And to understand why he's gambling it all on the future, going into Joker's Wild on the 23rd, you need to understand his past.
January 10, 10:51pm
As he hung up the phone, I thought I heard it. Maybe I didn't. I would've been surprised if I had, because I had just made Static talk about something that he didn't want to do.
I wanted to talk about the NAPW Tag Team Title victory. His partnership with "the Nexus One" Rex Caliber, formed not under similar agendas or friendship, but rather Commissioner "Wahoo" Bobby Winchell's desire to "shake things up" in NAPW on the 12/12/05 edition of Monday Night Fights, has has nothing but spectacular results, especially considering the circumstances. Rex and Static, collectively known as the Crimes, are undefeated in tag competition, have shown incredible chemistry in the ring, and have scored key victories, twice over the New and Improved D-X (once for the Tag Team Titles) and once over the Decapitators. I wanted to find out what their plans were for the future, how they were going to handle being perpetual underdogs in a division that also includes the Dudes, the Delivery Men, and the Doomriders, NAPW's upcoming supercard Joker's Wild, and what the name "the Crimes" means, after all.
But what I really wanted to talk about was his past in NAPW. He, on the other hand, did not, a point that he made terrifyingly clear when he almost threatened me over the phone, should I ask questions that he believed alluded to off-limit topics such as Ravager, the Provincial Title, and "the Mayor" Bill Fleming. He claimed that those interactions, those fueds and triumphs and defeats, were all part of Static's "first" era in NAPW, and he wanted to move on. The mere mention of something like "Get on my Level" his so-called "gold" record with Fleming, or dressing up like "Jungle Book" characters to throw Ravager off of his game, drew his distinct ire. I didn't want to ask those kinds of questions to poke fun at him, or to discredit his seemingly constructed image as that of a violent lunatic. Rather, I thought I'd be amazed as how far the man has really come in a span of two months. I was.
The Crimes' Tag Title reign began on January 9. If Static has it his way, we'll have no choice but to only talk about the future from now on.
STATIC ON...
... the Crimes: "Rex Caliber is the perfect yin to my yang. He's the Japan, the power, the shooter, the technical aspect to the team. I'm the Mexico, the lucha, the hardcore, the high-flying aspect to the team. He keeps me grounded, I keep him ambitious. Rex sometimes doesn't know what's best for himself, that's why I'm around. If he needs a kick in the ass to know what to do to benefit the team, that's why I'm around. The Crimes are the perfect tag team. Together, we're unbeatable."
Intervening time. He doesn't want me to bring up the past, I didn't go into journalism to make friends. "Very different from your past team-ups in NAPW. You actually teamed up with D-X at one point, as well as Lobo, and claimed to have hated both experiences."
He sighs. "Nice research. Actually, that only proves my point further. My other tag partners never had what it took to get the job done. D-X, especially. Heh. But Rex knows the score. Our chemistry, after one month, ONE MONTH. Is unmatched."
"You know, it feels like just yesterday, I'm watching my partner, a mentor of mine, a legend in his day, jump off a twenty-foot ladder to deliver a shooting star press to another legend... I went up there, climbed that ladder, and did the same move off that same ladder just to honor him. It became the Moment of Clarity. I was thinking about that when I hit Ravager with that very same move a few weeks ago on Monday Night Fights. Then I thought, 'Wow. You know what? I... need Rex Caliber.' We are a tag TEAM. It was natural. The Crimes are meant to be."
... on his match at Joker's Wild: "It's no excuse to lose, but I do think that D-X overlooked us on Monday in favor of the Dudes. It doesn't bother me to admit that, if anything, I'm proud that we've managed to slip under the radar and blow up in NAPW's face. They wanted D-X against the Dudes for the tag titles at Joker's Wild, and we crashed the party. Great. Let them kill each other. Gold is, after all, Rex's number one priority in life. I promise you that we'll show the Dudes and D-X a crime spree never to be forgotten."
... the name, "the Crimes": "Malum Prohibitum. In some circles, it refers to the idea of victimless crime. You know, crimes like drug use, gambling, or prostitution, that cause nobody harm except the person consenually doing them. These kinds of laws are only made because of the so-called moral standards (Bill Clinton, Richard Nixon anyone?) of the politicians who create them. Rex and I hold that our actions are only "psychopathic" or "dispicable" (thank you very much, Jackass Jones) because YOU, the fans, or YOU, the media, or YOU, NAPW administration, believe them to be so."
I interrupt him. It needs mentioning. I'm treading water. "For example, your attack on Bill Fleming."
Static exhales loudly and stays quiet for a few seconds, like a man who'd much rather be in a bull in a china shop right about now. "Yes, Adams. Our attack on the Mayor. That worm. He started getting my goat by just costing me matches and booking me in shit contests like Action against those three rookies. He quickly turned into nothing more than my lapdog. Fleming always liked to bring up the fact that we were both smallish in stature, both underdogs in the wrestling world... well, if it's one thing I learned, it's that I was never going to bow down and suck off anyone bigger than I was. As I almost fancied myself as his mentor as well as his client, I was insulted--INFURIATED--that he would -beg- me for forgiveness, that he'd go to Rex Caliber when I was too 'mean.' Bill Fleming became everything that I hate. In the mindset of the Crimes, taking out someone like that, is almost like assisting in Social Darwinism. Perfectly okay to us. Dispicable to the rest of you. Malum Prohibitum."
Static hung up the phone.
