Eric Flaherty: “…And I’m telling you Stein, the guy is an absolute workhorse. His athleticism, willingness to learn new things and accept his flaws…the potential is out of this world.
The scene opens inside of the Hybrid Gym Wrestling/MMA training facility. Blue wrestling mats stretch across the entire length and width of the zone, with a large group of people spread around, grappling . A rectangular race-track surrounds the mats, with extending arms to four different doors leading to side areas. Two men stand off in a corner, below a large sign reading “RING”, peeking through a fiberglass screen. One is noticeably taller and larger than the other. Upon a closer look, we see that the smaller man is Outlaw Pro Wrestling star Dan Stein, and the taller one, the retired wrestling/MMA superstar, Eric Flaherty.
Dan Stein: “Damn, you have a real hard-on for this guy. So you were saying he’s real pumped about pro wrestling?”
Flaherty: “Definitely. I mean obviously the environment is completely different than he’s used to. Amateur Mixed Martial Arts events in Russia aren’t the most glamorous affairs you’ve ever seen, but I brought him to a bunch of shows since he’s been in the country and he absolutely loved it. For a guy who doesn’t show much emotion, he was like a kid at a carnival.”
Stein: “So what’s this place you guys are looking into for him to start out?”
Flaherty: “Rebel Pro Wrestling, smaller indy fed based in North Carolina. Kind of a sister fed to a place out of Western Canada, you might have heard of it before, NAPW. Pretty sure Rebel holds its shows at an armory, so he doesn’t have to worry about being in front of hundreds of thousands of fans yet. Run by some quality guys, so I’m real happy about the whole deal.
The camera pans over to look through the glass at the ring inside. Two men are leaning over the adjacent ropes, taking a break from their action in the ring to drink some water. One is the man Flaherty and Stein are discussing. He has shoulder-length dark brown hair, and is wearing a pair of red board shorts with a Full Contact Fighter logo near the knee. He’s a well-built man, in stark contrast to the man in the ring with him. The man is nearly the same height as Mikhail, but is lacking the muscle mass and is more…rotund. They throw their water bottles off to the side, and Mikhail pushes the man into the corner of the ring, clinching with him and shadowing punches and knees.
Stein: “Is that Jack? I haven’t seen him around here in awhile, he doesn’t look in such great shape to be in there with the kid.”
Flaherty: “Yeah he’s been out of action with the new baby and all, but he’s around the same height and weight as Mikhail’s opponent for next week. I mean I gave Mike Dexter a call to come down and help but…”
Stein: “Whoa, next week? They’re throwing him into a match already?”
Flaherty: “Yeah, like I said, things fell into place rather quickly. I’m pretty happy with the fight, though. Guy’s name is Kurt James, likes to call himself the Crusher. From what I found, he’s a former football player turned wrestler. He’s the grappling type so Mikhail will match up with him pretty well. He’s a little bigger, and has a good amount of experience. Held a few titles in his time too, so he should be real tough. I’m not worried though, the kid’s ready, and he needs to start somewhere right?
Stein: “Yeah. Well, I think I’ll jump in there with him for awhile. Will he understand me?”
Flaherty: “Yeah, no problem at all. He’s studied English since he was young so he has a good grasp of the language. His accent might give you a little bit of trouble but he’s fine with repeating himself if you need him to.”
Stein: “Good, he’ll need that if he’s going to be cutting any promos as a part of his contract. When’s he going to start doing that anyway?”
Flaherty: “This afternoon, after lunch.”
Stein: “Is that why that camera’s been in my face all this time?”
Flaherty: “Yeah, they wanted to get some training footage, but we’re going to go over some strategy for his opponent while we eat and then we’ll have him say a few words about it. I mean with what we’ve got there isn’t much anyway. Mikhail isn’t a big fan of some of the more conceited fellas he’s seen or heard, so I hope, for his opponent’s sake, he’s humble.
Stein: “Doesn’t like arrogance? How does he deal with you?”
Flaherty: “Screw you. I was going to have him take it easy on you too. I hope he blows out your knee with that heel hook of his.”
Stein: “Damn Russians and their leg locks.”
Stein opens the door to the room with the ring. Flaherty follows, and the two hop into the ring. Eric appears to introduce the two, and Kharitonov and Stein shake hands as the scene fades.
