(Once in a while, we don't start with darkness. Sometimes we start with Ringmaster Iago, sitting in his big comfy easy chair, cane resting against the arm, holding a book of American History, in front of a roaring fire in a well appointed sitting room.)
IAGO: Ah. Hello there. I didn't hear you come in. I wa just reading up on a little American history.
(Iago closes the book and smiles.)
IAGO: It seems our esteemed opponent, Mr. Murcielago, has decided to throw down something of a historical trump card upon me. Indeed, the Battle of Chancellorsville was something of a coup for the Confederated forces of the south. And indeed, it is an example of a plucky - perhaps even heroic - underdog overcoming seemingly impossible odds.
(Iago's smile widens.)
IAGO: But there's one piece of history that Murcielago seems to have neglected to mention. Something I'm certain the uncouth hill-folk of South Carolina are all too familiar with. The Confederated States certainly won that battle... but they didn't exaclty win the war now did they?
Indeed, if memory serves, the Confederated States surrendered to the Union Forces. Beaten, weak and miserable, they finally realized they had no chance of winning, and they wisely submitted to powerhouse they were up against.
And, Murcielago, like the Civil War of your metaphor, you may win some battles at Golden Opportunities... but inside of that ring, against Caliban, it's going to be a war. A war that like the South, you had no business even showing up for. And like the people of South Carolina during the Civil War, come Tuesday night, you'll be beaten into submission.
(Iago laughs, tips his hat, and goes back to reading his book. Fade out.)
