(Darkness. Calliope music. Spotlight. A single podium in the middle of the darkness. A tall, lean figure in a purple jacket stands, head down, obscured by a top hat. One hand rests on the podium. The other rests on the top of a silver tipped cane. Slowly, the man's head rises - first revealing a pointy, devilish goatee, then a creepily wide and toothy grin, a hawkish nose, and finally a pair of eyes, filled with sinister mirth.)
(Iago.)
IAGO: (In a British accented voice) Ladies and Gentlemen! Step right up! Step right up! Behold an amazing array of oddities and horrors the likes of which you've never imagined! See a man who breathes fire! A woman who eats glass! A living, breathing, Fiji Mermaid! You'll see it all and more, right here tonight... but wait!
(The sinister carnival barker leans forward, and swings his cane back towards the darkness.)
IAGO: Perhaps you'd like to see THIS lovely young beauty.
(Another spotlight, farther back. A young woman. Her head is topped with red curls that hang to her shoulders. She wears a green sleeveless blouse, leather bracers on her wrists, and a pair of form hugging leather pants. Draped around her neck is a bullwhip. Her expression is sultry, green eyes sparkling in the light.)
IAGO: Why, you ask, is such a creature as this here in our menagerie of the macabre? She certainly doesn't seem to be a freak of nature, does she? Well, she may not be unnatural, but she's far from "normal".
(The woman pulls down the bullwhip, swings her arm, and as the end of the whip hits the sound barrier there is a CRACK! Iago doesn't flinch, his smile, if anything, grows unnaturally wider.)
IAGO: This, is Miranda. From a young age, Miranda has had a rapport with the creatures of the wild. She has stared down lions. She has brought feral wolves to heel. With a single soothing word I myself have seen this young creature stop a charging rhinoceros. Far, from "normal."
(A third spotlight. CALIBAN. The monster stands, glowering. Dreadlocks, grown longer in the past year, hang around him like a shaggy lion's mane. The inhuman rage that lives within him is barely contained. He is like a cat, poised to pounce.)
IAGO: Oh ho! I see the fear, ladies and gentlemen! Behold, Caliban! More animal, than man! A creature of the wild, trapped in a human shell! The most dangerous creature of our sideshow. Don't fear, children! There is no need to run! For, you see, Miranda has tamed even this beast...
(Miranda, spotlight following her, steps over to the man-beast. Caliban doesn't move, doesn't strike. She takes his arm, and Caliban's head turns slowly to look down at her. His rage seems to subside, and Miranda gives his hand a squeeze. Taking him by the hand, she leads him in the darkness, their spotlights fade.)
IAGO: Have I your interest, ladies and gentlemen? Are you ready to brave the terrors that this tent contains?
(Suddenly we're closer to Iago. Looking up at him at an angle. His head turns sharply down to us, and his cane lashes out to point directly into the camera.)
IAGO: You there! Little boy! What's you're name? Warren, eh? Are YOU ready to step on into this tent? Ready to risk life and limb to share the same space as a monster that sees you only as prey? Are you willing to put your life into the lovely Miranda's hands?
(The camera flicks back to its original position. Iago's head snaps back to us, and he swings his cane around in a sweeping arc, gesturing to the darkness behind him.)
IAGO: Ladies and gentlemen, young Warren, and everyone who thinks they're bold enough to cross this threshold... are you ready to step into the very... Heart of Darkness!
(CRACK. Caliban's huge shape RUSHES from the darkness, directly into the camera, and in a flurry of motion all is darkness.)
