Okay I've finally been able to sit down and watch the film "Hard Candy" and I can easily say it was one of the better movies of '06.
Directed by David Slade & written by Brian Nelson this is about the world of Internet predators.
It starts off with a friendly familiar online chat between a man and a woman. They agree to meet. This is where we find Hailey, a 14 year old girl who looks like the kid next door. Her suitor is Jeff, who is in his early thirties or so. They flirt innocently at first, and it slowly ends up that the young girl wants to see Jeffs house. Once at the house Hailey discovers that Jeff is a photographer and his artwork covers his walls. Jeff offers his young friend some booze and see declines by saying "they told us in school to never drink anything you didn't mix yourself."
That being said the duo go to the kitchen and down some screwdrivers. Hailey starts to pester Jeff about wanting him to take her picture and he agrees...Only...Jeff should have listened to Haileys advice about watching who fixes your drink. Next thing you know Jeff is tied up and finds himself face to face with the most insane 14 year old on Earth. Seems Hailey is convinced Jeff is a pedophile and why not? He knew her age when they met at the coffee house. She tears apart his house looking for evidence to prove his guilt. She also plays some cruel mind games on Jeff to keep him off balance. The girl that plays Hailey - Ellen Page - is great in this thriller. Always toying with Jeff and you can't help but laugh at some of her bizarre sense of humor.
As the games (and torture) continue it seems Hailey is also curious about a girl who has recently gone missing. Seems that Hailey is convinced Jeff knows more than he's telling. After a long search, she stumbles across Jeffs secret staff & from this point on he knows he's seriously screwed. Everytime Jeff thinks he has the upper hand on Hailey it turns out she's one step ahead of him. We're treated to a torture scene that will leave the guys holding their breath and we see that no matter how much of a deviant Jeff is...Hailey is 1000 times worse.
I won't spill the end, but I will say that secrets are revealed and the repercussions are harsh. A great thriller that I would suggest to anyone who loves a good jolt.
