(START. We have a shot of a potentially catatonic midget in a bee costume sitting on the front steps to his home. Hsi face is an Easter Island-type build of robotic stoicism; the antennae attached to his headgear seem to droop a little. Beside him is a pait of miniature leather suitcases, and in his hands, a handmade sign reading "PARTNER--OR BE CRUSHED" stays steady.)
NARRATOR: The Bee has held his watch for over a week now.
(In the distance, the sound of a passing car; The Bee cranes his tiny neck to spot it.)
NARRATOR: Two weeks ago, there was an open call made by fellow wrestler Kurt "The Crusher" James.
(The Bee starts following the car with his eyes, off-camera.)
NARRATOR: He was looking for a tag team partner for NAPW Tagstravaganza II.
(The Bee's eyes follow the car all the way to the other side of his face.)
NARRATOR: The Bee and Crusher used to wrestle in NAPW at the same time. He figured it would be a natural team-up.
(With the car gone, The Bee's eyes snap back to looking straight ahead.)
NARRATOR: The Bee has heard no news whatsoever, choosing instead to camp out days on his front steps for when Crusher comes to pick him up.
(Pause. Bird chirping picks up in the background. The Bee resumes his energy-saving trance.
CUT. In the kitchen, the young, dark-haired Nenji faces away from the camera while finishing drying some dishes.)
NARRATOR: Nenji has been The Bee's friend since The Bee's very first match.
(Nenji dries his hands off with a dishtowel.)
NARRATOR: Being much stronger than The Bee, he beat him easily.
(Nenji picks up the plates he's been working on, and opens the cupboard with his other hand.)
NARRATOR: The Bee took his loss very badly, and so Nenji let himself get pinned to even up the score.
(He slides the plates in, and shuts the cupboard.)
NARRATOR: By doing so, he made fast friends with his opponent.
(His back still to the camera, Nenji points his arms out, stretching his shoulders.)
NARRATOR: Soon after this, he stopped being booked regularly.
(CUT. The camera's tight on a flickering LCD monitor. Taking up most of the screen is a movie file, one of a track-suited, sunglassed Crusher being interviewed.)
VOICE: (off) What about The Bee?
CRUSHER: (Smirks.) Not an insect please, I need a real person.
(CUT. Close-up of Nenji's face, illuminated by the computer screen.)
NARRATOR: The Crusher has found a partner in REBEL Pro's Warren, a headbanger who hangs out in convenience stores.
(Nenji's eyes dart from one point to another, to another. We hear clicking.)
NARRATOR: At the time we shot this footage, Warren had yet to win a match.
(Pause. Nenji's eyes study one point on the screen intently.)
NARRATOR: In Nenji's opinion, calling Warren a "real person" when The Bee is "not" is a slap to the face.
(Nenji shuts his eyes, takes a deep breath, and opens them again.)
NARRATOR: Nenji has not told The Bee he's been turned down.
(CUT. On the front porch, The Bee continues his vigil.)
NARRATOR: Last night's Awesome Wrestling eXplosion show was cancelled. The Bee had scheduled time to train with his new partner.
(The camera pans over, revealing Nenji looking at him past the drawn living room curtain.)
NARRATOR: Nenji used his night off to watch Spider-Man 3.
(He lets the curtain drop, as he walks away.)
NARRATOR: He felt guilty and didn't enjoy it.
(CUT. Back at the video monitor, a different video plays--a motor-mouthed young man in a black T-shirt, hair like Nenji's, but having a few years on him, and more muscle definition.)
D!: Un-LESS! Maybe, just maybe, there was a second possibility. Maybe you don't have a title shot because nobody, but nobody, knows or even gives a crap who you are!
(CUT. Back to Nenji's monitor-lit face.)
NARRATOR: Nenji got into wrestling because of his older sister's friend. A wrestler who went by the odd name of D!
(CUT. Another clip of D!, struggling with a bloodied, blond-haired wrestler at the top of a steel cage before he latches on his signature NyQuil Driver to bring him crashing to the mat.)
NARRATOR: Nenji followed his idol into NAPW. He'd hoped to emulate his success.
(D!, barely able to stir, slides his arm on top of his flattened opponent. A ref becomes visible in the shot, and counts a three.)
NARRATOR: D! vaccilated between sheltering Nenji, and pushing him away.
(The cursor moves to close the window, stopping the video.)
NARRATOR: One year later, D! was fired by NAPW management. He then severely beat a cameraman, and is presumed to have fled the country.
(CUT. Back to Nenji's face. We hear some more clicking.)
NARRATOR: Nenji feels that if he'd paid more attention to D!, he never would have done what he'd did.
(CUT. A new video starts, with a cruel-looking, short-haired man finishing addressing the viewer before walking away. The video zooms in and focuses on a table, sporting a trophy of some kind. A note taped to the trophy reads "He'll be back for this eventually.")
NARRATOR: He and others know that D!'s return is inevitable.
(CUT. Somehow shot from above, Nenji lays back on the living room leather couch, arms folded under his head. His eyes remain open, tracing an imaginary line throughout the room.)
NARRATOR: In his estimation, if Nenji hadn't had such poor luck, he could be NAPW Champion right now, and not D!'s old enemy, Ravager.
(From off, a sharp door knock.)
NARRATOR: As it stands, Nenji has stopped watching NAPW programming. He reasons that AWX is a full-time commitment.
(The knocking continues.)
NARRATOR: And perhaps writing his memoirs.
(Nenji gives in to the knocking, and rolls off the couch onto his feet. He walks up, off the screen and is gone.
CUT. Medium shot of the kitchen's back door. A third burst of knocking stops and starts. Nenji walks into the shot, and swings the door open--it's Turancula, the dark-suited, white-tied, pony-tailed Latino Sensation.)
TURANCULA: You need to tell The Bee the truth.
(Pause. Turancula's eyes bug out further.)
TURANCULA: Bye-bye.
(Turancula walks back out the way he came.
CUT. On the front steps, The Bee continues his vigil.)
NARRATOR: The Bee knows that Nenji might feel rejected with his new team-up with The Crusher.
(The front door opens, and Nenji steps through.)
NARRATOR: But he just wanted something different for once.
(Nenji moves to The Bee's side, and has a seat. He tries opening his mouth, but settles on looking out the way that his friend's looking.)
NARRATOR: This has been Ian Griffin-Stewart, your narrator.
(Nenji shuffles in his seat, and goes to open his mouth.
END.)
