Jay O'Brien is correct. Taka is the first Champ that the WWE recognized. The title was never formally recognized in North America until 1997. (fun fact: Chris Benoit and Ultimo Dragon are both former WWF Light Heavyweight champions. But will never be recognized in the Fed)
