Ravager with an ice pack against the back of his head. He seems... perturbed to say the least.
So I guess Reynolds got his answer, huh?
A bitter chuckle from the champ.
Frankly, the only reason I kept up appearances that long was because it amused me to do so. I never had any intention of helping Casino. And I knew that he had no interest in working with me. As long as he kept his nose out of my title match, I was fine to let him run his mouth. But then came the big surprise.
Evan, Evan, Evan. I thought you were smarter than that. I don't know why you did what you did. I don't know why you chose to trust him again. You were good enough on your own. You had the title shot all locked up. And now? Hope you're a fast healer. Because your spot may not be waiting for you when you get back. Because someone else has jumped ahead in line.
Lloyd Rees. The Lemondrop Kid. Funny how we've never met one on one. We've been in War Games against one another. We've been in tag matches against each other. But until now, it's never been just us. But you can save your talk of destiny for a little while. I just got this back.
Holds up the NAPW Heavyweight title belt.
Over a year of struggling. Back biting. Extorting. Bleeding. Cheating. Until finally I have this belt back in my hands again. You, on the other hand? You didn't seem to have the same problems as me. Sure, you lost the title pretty quick. But you didn't have to struggle long to get it back. And your record with the Provincial Title has been unsurpassed. You've held the most titles in the history of NAPW. And now you're looking to add one more...
Ravager smirks.
Man did you pick the wrong champion on the wrong week. Right now I have about half a dozen people looking at me, waiting for me to make mistakes. Fusenhoff in TEAM. Casino and his Untouchables. David Banks next week. All looking for a weakness. All ready for me to fall on my face, so they can swoop in and pick up the pieces. So how does one deal with this, you ask? Simply put, I have to dominate. And what better place to start than with the most decorated athlete NAPW has? Two time NAPW champion. Three time Provincial Champion. Television Champion. A better TEAM record than I could muster... at least until last week. What better way to gain credibility than to beat you, Lloyd? I mean, I don't expect an easy time of it. There's no such thing in this business. Except against Joey. (chuckles) But what more motivation do I need?
Pause
Well, there is one thing...
Cut to later. Ravager is in the offices of Rex Caliber.
Caliber: No.
Ravager: I wasn't asking for a match. I'm pretty well booked up for the next month. But I just thought...
Caliber: I told you, it's best for business if I keep you and the Untouchables away from each other. Focus on your match. Rees is a legitimate threat to your title. He's beaten D! He's beaten Cartwright. He's beaten me...
Ravager: So have I.
Caliber: Well, he didn't have the problems with Bickle that you did. And circumstances are different now. Isn't it enough that I have Simply Beautiful as referee?
Ravager: You did that for me? Are you that scared that I can't handle Rees? I don't need your help.
Caliber: That's not the case. I want a referee that won't get knocked out with one punch.
Ravager: I have proven that I can handle myself in the ring. I have beaten the best NAPW has to offer...
Caliber: And you also get distracted very easily. Plus so many of your matches seem to end up with outside interference. And what you just suggested...
Ravager: Well, I wanted to give an up close look to potential future opponents.
Caliber: They know what you can do. And they gave you a good idea what they're capable of last week. You need to be more patient. I know you. You always get your revenge one way or another. But right now you need to worry about Rees. He's never beaten you, true, but you've always had a partner to take the fall. This time, you're on your own. And I don't think you want to lose the belt on your first defense.
Ravager: I hear that's pretty humiliating. Was it for you?
Rex glares at his champion.
Caliber: You may not invite the Untouchables to ringside to "watch your match". Hell, Winchell wouldn't even allow that. You want Casino so bad, do what I told you to do. Keep winning in TEAM. Casino's in the same bracket as you, and if you guys keep up your performances, your paths will cross soon enough. Let him worry about his Pure Honor match. You have a big enough task ahead of you.
Ravager: You used to like to stir up (bleep) Rex. Has management softened you?
Caliber: I've sunk a lot of money into the NAPW. I'm not going to lose my investment with fans asking for refunds because a champion can't defend due to injury.
Ravager: You're money's safe Rex.
Caliber: And it's going to stay that way. Now get out of here. Go prepare for your title match.
Ravager stands up to leave.
Ravager: Sooner or later Rex. I want a match...
Caliber: No challenges from you. You got plenty of matches coming up. You're defending against the number one contenders and every non title opponent I give you. You don't have time for special challenges.
Ravager: Fine.
Ravager stalks off.
Caliber: And here I thought he'd lighten up if he got the damn belt.
