(It's late Friday night. So late that it's Saturday Morning. We're deep in the bowels of the Student's Union Building on the University of Alberta campus, deep inside The Vault that is the broadcast booth of the mighty CJSR, campus radio station and bastion of university culture and slightly amateurish djs. The man who's currently rocking the microphone, however, is not an amateur. Over a six year veteran of broadcasting, this man has brought metal and HARD rock to the hungry ears of Edmonton's metalheads. He pushes pause on the cd player as the last chord slams out.)
METAL JOHN: Aaand that was "Horror Business" by The Misfits, originally from the EP of the same name. It's 1:32 a.m. and you're listening to Mind Compression, your weekly dose of metal right here on the Mighty CJSR. As always I'm Metal John, and joining me in the studio, a rare treat for Mind Compression, we have Bruce "The Beast" Richards, wrestler with our local New Alberta Pro Wrestling promotion. Welcome to the program, Bruce.
BRUCE RICHARDS: (Smiling.) Pleasure to be here, Metal John. I'm actually kind of jealous of you; always wanted to have a show on CJSR while I was here at University.
METAL JOHN: You can always volunteer; we need volunteers. And you can just call me John, by the way.
BRUCE RICHARDS: Right. So, what did you do to get saddled with this timeslot?
METAL JOHN: (Chuckles.) It's not so bad, Bruce; if I wasn't here I'd be havin' some beer and listening to metal music anyways, so might as well play it for the masses as well.
BRUCE RICHARDS: And substitute the beer for coffee.
METAL JOHN: Naturally. So, Bruce, what brings you here to Mind Compression? I'm a big fan of the NAPW myself: you a fan of the show?
BRUCE RICHARDS: Unfortunately, John, not a big metal fan, sorry. I'm here because, well, as you've been a big supporter of the NAPW in the past, the new management thought that we could try and get a little free publicity, and because I'm friends with the new owner, he roped me into it.
METAL JOHN: And folks, if you want to give us a call here at the station, Bruce has brought along two free tickets to the taping of Tuesday Night Fights and NAPW Action! on Monday. You have a few minutes for a short interview?
BRUCE RICHARDS: That's why I'm here.
METAL JOHN: Right. Now, this might be a sore spot for you, but up until a few weeks ago, you were part of the reigning Tag Team Champions, but as of your last match you not only lost the titles but had to split up your tag team. How are you feeling about that?
BRUCE RICHARDS: Well, John, I'm not going to lie and say I'm fine with it. It hurts, yeah. I'm not happy. But when something like this happens you have to examine your life, and I'm pretty happy with the last five years. 5 NAPW Championships, Hegstrand Cup, international reknown...The Midnight Cowboys can take the titles but they can't take our past achievements away. Kyle and I have set the bar really high, and it's going to be a long time before anyone else comes close.
METAL JOHN: Speaking of Kyle Roberts: how is he doing?
BRUCE RICHARDS: He's...doing fine. He and his fiancee Amy took off on a bit of a vacation last week, and they've sent me a few e-mails. Even though the stipulation stands and D-X can't team any more, Kyle and I still have each other's backs.
METAL JOHN: Good to hear. Anything we can look forward to on next week's show?
BRUCE RICHARDS: Well, there's the Six-Man Tag match featuring Evan Cartwright and The Doomriders against The Untouchables. I'm giving the edge to the Doomies, of course; I think Casino might be a little distracted by his new family obligations. The tag team scene's still hot even without The New & Improved D-X: I'll be keeping my eye on the match between Next Generation and The Famous Monsters of Hollyweird. SB taking on Lloyd Rees should be a barnburner.
METAL JOHN: And of course, there's your match against Stone Zellor, one of the men who took your title.
BRUCE RICHARDS: (Grimaces.) Yeah.
METAL JOHN: He beat you the last time you met.
BRUCE RICHARDS: Well, that's not strictly true. Stone Zellor never pinned me. And he never will. John, you've seen me in matches before, you know what I'm capable of. Stone and Clint Zellor are, let's face it, extremely good tag team wrestlers. But Stone's got nothing on me, one on one. I'm bigger, I'm stronger, I'm more powerful. He's got speed on me, sure, and he comes off those ropes like some kind of kamikaze jet fighter, but I'm no slouch in the high-flying department either. And I've got something that Stone doesn't have. The fire. He's got nothing to prove. But me? It's my first singles match in months; I've got my eye on a couple of titles, proving that I can do it. And I'm looking forward to proving it by taking Stone Zellor out to the curb like the garbage he is.
METAL JOHN: Well, I hate to cut you off there Bruce, but we have a caller for those tickets. (Pushes a button.) Hello, this is Mind Compression, you're on the air.
VOICE: bruce your so gay stone zellors gonna knock your (BLEEP)ing head off--
METAL JOHN: And that's enough of that. Thank god for the seven second delay.
BRUCE RICHARDS: There's something familiar about that guy.
METAL JOHN: Well, we've done enough yakking for right now Bruce, we're going to have to get back to the music. You want to stick around for a while?
BRUCE RICHARDS: You going to put another pot of coffee on?
METAL JOHN: Will do. And don't forget, we still have two tickets available, give us a call. Okay, coming up next is a little Deicide, here's "Creatures of Habit" here on CJSR, this is Mind Compression.
(As the loud death metal sounds spew out the speakers, we fade, appropriately, to black.)
