(Lights up. It is a serene Christmas setting; plush armchair, crackling hearth, Christmas tree. It’s probably a bookstore somewhere. Several children have gathered around the chair, and eagerly chatter amongst themselves. After a moment, TIFFANY steps into the scene, dressed in her cheerleader outfit, and carrying a children’s storybook. She sits in the chair.)
TIFFANY: Hey kids!
KIDS: (More or less in unison.) Hello Miss. MacIntyre!
TIFFANY: Is everyone ready for story time?
KIDS: (More or less in unison.) Yeah!
(Tiffany delicately opens the book and clears her throat.)
TIFFANY: Once upon a time, in a kingdom far, far away, there lived a Stylish King.
KIDS: Boo!
TIFFANY: He was a bad king, who hated his people and cared only for the wealth that being king gave him. In fact, he liked being king so much that one day he went out into the countryside, all disguised in red, to help make sure he’d always be the king. He travelled for many days, but finally came to the cave where the terrible Brutish Beast lived.
KIDS: (Gasp!)
TIFFANY: Now the Brutish Beast was a terrible monster. He lived his life in the darkness and hated the light, but he hated the people of the kingdom even more. In fact, he hated the Stylish King too, so when the king appeared in his cave, the Brutish Beast went to eat him. But the Stylish King had a plan. He told the Brutish Beast that he could come live at the castle, and help protect him. In payment, the Brutish Beast could share the Stylish King’s riches, and have his fill of the people.
KIDS: Booooo!
TIFFANY: Now the people didn’t like this new and improved deal between the Stylish King and the Brutish Beast. They searched far and wide, looking for champions who would come to their aid and defeat their evil king. It didn’t take long, because very soon a pair of heroes arrived from the neighbouring kingdom of Calgary.
KIDS: Yay!
TIFFANY: These two heroes tried everything to defeat the evil Stylish King and the Brutish Beast, even stooping as low as their level, but they just couldn’t do it.
KIDS: Awww….
TIFFANY: But soon a second pair of heroes stepped up to challenge the Stylish King and the Brutish Beast. They were knights from the kingdom who’d had enough of the evil king’s rule. One knight wielded an axe, the other a diamond sword.
KIDS: Yaaaayyy!
TIFFANY: But again, the Stylish King and the Brutish Beast’s combined power was too much, and they cheat. And though the knights gave it their all, the evil king remained in power.
KIDS: Awwwwwww….
TIFFANY: But then a pair of court jesters arrived in the hall of the Stylish King.
KIDS: (Laughter)
TIFFANY: The people were curious, as no court jesters had been seen in the land for some time. The Stylish King and the Brutish Beast laughed at the jesters’ japes and wiles, and saw them as an amusing distraction. The Brutish Beast and the Stylish King began to relax, spending time reading books and listening to music to look smart, and, of course, baiting bears. They didn’t take the jesters seriously, but the jesters had a secret. They knew the secret past of the Stylish King, how he’d once been a Stylish Knave in their homeland. How he’d run away from home when they wouldn’t let him be king.
KIDS: (More laughter)
TIFFANY: And so, using this knowledge, the jesters were able to humiliate the Stylish King. The evil king ran away, never to be seen again, and the Brutish Beast, angry at the Stylish King for abandoning him, chased after him for the rest of their days. The jesters were praised for their guile, and were named kings of the land! And they all lived happily ever after!
KIDS and TIFFANY: (In unison.) The End!
(As Tiffany closes the book, the lights go down.)
