OOC Note - not so much an RP as just me finishing the story I had started.
We open on a small cramped apartment and find Jack Benton sitting on a couch that's seen better days. It looks as if he hasn't shaved in weeks and his hair is now down past his shoulders. Numerous empty liqueur bottles litter the table in front of Benton but his attention is elsewhere. On the television he's watching a news report in progress.
Reporter - Catching you up on the recent scandal here at Hope Hospital for the mentally insane, it seems as if the final nail has been put into the coffin of this regions oldest institution. Word came down today that Hope Hospital has officially filled for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and will be closing their doors for good. Viewers will certainly remember the tragic events that lead to this sad situation. It was on this very day two years ago that Officer Jack Benton tried to stop a patient from escaping.
Jack Benton groans and holds his head in his hands.
Benton - (quietly) All my fault....
Reporter - However, during a struggle the inmate who still to this day has never been positively identified managed to wrestle the gun away from officer Benton and kill two men before making his escape. Officer Benton was subsequently cleared of any charges and soon vanished from the pubic view.
Benton looks up and we see tears in his eyes.
Reporter - After an exhaustive manhunt police were unable to find the escaped inmate, a man the officers called "Misery" and just recently classified his case as being cold. Despite all of this the lawsuits continue to pour in concerning the hospital and....
The reporter freezes on screen and we see that Jack Benton is watching this report on a VCR. He uses the remote to rewind the tape and watches the reporter once again, this time mouthing the words along with him.
Jack Benton stands in the middle of what used to be Otmar Olsina's Waste Management. However the sign outside is faded and worn. Also, someone with an odd sense of humor has blacked out most of the letters leaving only the word "sin" behind. Benton walks over to a beat to hell mercury and pries open the trunk. The door opens with a squeal and inside the moldy trunk is a large burlap bag. Benton looks at it and smiles.
Benton - (quietly) and they wonder why they couldn't find you. It's because I found you first. You took everything I loved away. My sister, my marriage, my job....But I got you in the end didn't I?
Benton reaches in and pokes the bag.
Benton - (quietly) But...You know what? After our last meeting here in this...This kingdom of rats....I felt relieved. For a little while. But you were always on my mind. Always in my dreams. The night I ended you...I died too. But that's why you left me alive that night isn't it? So I would suffer? So I would hunt you down and become what you were?
Benton reaches into his coat pocket and pulls something out. It looks like a crude homemade mask.
Benton - (quietly) I bet you must be lonely here...I know I'm lonely. I wonder...How many others out there are like me? Like us? I wonder...
Benton smiles and pulls the mask over his face. It's a mask we know all to well.
Benton - Maybe I should stay here. Stay and keep you company. Stay and try to change things. They were wrong in what they did to me. They were the ones who made mistakes not me. But I can fix it. I can change it all. make it good again. Like before. But I need your help. I bet you like that don't you? The irony? The police say you're dead but I think it's time to show them that Misery can never really die.
With that the man who used to be known as Jack Benton slams the car trunk lid and begins a trip that will change everything.
misery - i can bring them here...i need company. misery...loves company.
